Christopher W. Poverman

Christopher W. Poverman is of counsel to Funk & Bolton, P.A., resident in the firm's Baltimore office. Mr. Poverman's practice consists of counseling insurers across all business lines on matters related to insurance coverage, claims-handling best practices, premium and claim fraud, and the avoidance of extra-contractual liabilities. He advises companies insuring large commercial property risks on matters involving product development, the creation and interpretation of manuscript forms, and quota-share programs.

Mr. Poverman began his legal career as a trial lawyer in Wilmington, Delaware representing insurance carriers in first- and third-party coverage and defense claims in state and federal court. By the mid-1990s, Mr. Poverman's practice encompassed all varieties of complex commercial insurance issues. He has assisted clients in the US and overseas with coverage, appraisal and litigation matters involving complex property and business interruption losses, fire losses, arson and fraud, builder's risk, specialty lines, weather related and terrorism catastrophes, environmental contamination, time element losses, premium fraud, product liability/completed operations, boiler and machinery, coverage disputes with artists and the media, advertising liability coverage and defense, transportation, cargo and inland marine coverage, as well as oil, gas and energy claims. Mr. Poverman has tried jury cases involving all manner of first- and third-party matters including product liability, employee dishonesty, and advertising injury coverage. He has also participated in litigation involving some of the country's largest first-party coverage disputes, including the Y2K sue and labor claims, and the World Trade Center/Silverstein case arising out of 9/11. Mr. Poverman has also argued appeals in various state and federal courts, and regularly represents clients in arbitrations, mediations and appraisals.

Mr. Poverman lectures frequently on matters of interest to insurance professionals. Some of his more recent presentations include "Adjusting Losses Involving Commercial Leases" for the Loss Executives Association, "Emerging Issues in Business Interruption Insurance" and "CGL Products Liability Claims and Product-Completed Operations Hazard Coverage" for PLRB/LIRB, and "Emerging Issues in Biotechnology Coverage" for the American Bar Association Section of Litigation's Insurance Coverage Committee. He has authored numerous articles on subjects such as calculating the period of restoration, the limits of civil authority, and the interplay between litigation and appraisal.
